1998

VHS
Documentary of film maker's grandmother, using footage (super 8) from home movies while Aurora tells of her memories with her grandmother, Josephine. Emphasis is placed on Josephine's talent as a coluratura, the highest soprano as Aurora weaves in old recordings with newer ones. An almost haunting and dreamlike mood or tone is set throughout due to the discoloration of the film and the decaying state of Josephine. Aurora does a good job of conveying her personal struggle with the relationship between herself and grandmother. For instance, she uses "closeups" of Josephine hunched over in a chair as unseen family members discuss what should be done about her living situation.
