More Masters Theses from MES and MIT
Go On-line

April 1, 2009

The Evergreen State College has been graduating students from its three Masters programs since 1983 soon after the MPA program was established. Until 2006, two bound copies were supplied to the Library - one for the circulating collection and one for the College's Archives.

In 2007 a new system was initiated. Due to the fact that the Theses were being generated digitally by their respective writers, a decision was made to reduce the bound versions to one and maintain a digital version as a second master copy. The decision included the intent to make the digital copy available on-line.

The theses can be found on the Library's catalog in general through an author, title, or subject search or through searching the Graduate Program as author, "Evergreen State College Graduate Program in Environmental Studies"..

Some theses prior to 2007 have been scanned and are now available on-line as well. Go to: http://archives.evergreen.edu/masterstheses/home.htm for a list of available theses.

Wiedemann's Journals Digitized

Founding and now emeritus Faculty member Al Wiedemann's Grinnell style natural history journals have been made available to the Archives for digitization. The approximate thirty volumes trace Dr. Wiedemann's observations since 1975. An excellent source for students in Environmental Studies programs.

Update 21 April 2009: Digitization of Journals from 1975-1986 has been completed.

NOTE TO CHESS PLAYERS

The Library "Underground" has two chess boards setup for aficianados of the game. The boards and chess men are provided courtesy of Archivist Randolph Stilson. Come play and have a cup of tea while you are at it.

Women's History Project Continues

Evergreen Archives and Special Collections has joined the Washington Women's History Consortium in presenting a grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The announcement of success we are waiting for will come next spring in April with the projects being funded for the next three years. We will let the campus know if we get good news.

Jolene Unsoeld:
Personal Papers Finding Aid Created

In addition to The Co-Respondents (Women's History Project) the Archives has initiated the much more daunting task of creating a finding aid for Jolene Unsoeld's Personal Papers.

Update 01 April 2009 - A more detailed finding aid for Jolene Unsoeld's Personal Papers is in the works. It will contain links to specific documents that are illustrative of Ms. Unsoeld's life and work as lobbyist, state legislator and U.S. Representative. Links from the Women's History Project web pages and from the TESC Archives page will make this information available to the public.

Tea Thief

Break week was slow and provided time for staff to ready the Library Underground for Orientation Week. A full canister of loose leaf tea was placed out ready for the hordes of tea drinkers expected. The next day it was obvious that an individual had thought they constituted a horde as they made off with the tea and the canister. Anyone with knowledge of someone who has recently obtained a tall canister full of loose leaf tea is asked to remind them to bring back the canister when they are through with it.

New Donation

Wanda Gayle recently donated the scrapbook that the Outdoor Education 1978/79 Program's students created as a memorial to Willi Unsoeld and Janie Diepenbrock. It can be found in Accession 76-32 in the "Oversized" box for various Program Histories.

Organic Farm Documents on-line

Person's researching the origins and history of TESC's "Community Farm and Organic Garden" now have access to the early documents via the TESC Archives web page. The documentation is generally in two locations; Accession 76-32 Program Histories and Accession 76-16 Student Research Papers and Projects

Interns

Archives and Special Collections is fortunate to have three interns and a volunteer working for us fall quarter 2009. Along with two work study students we hope to make a small dent in the backlog of materials that need processing and "finding aid" development. Anyone interested in learning about "Encoded Archival Description" may join what Archivist Randolph Stilson hopes will be a weekly seminar on this most recent endeavor to make archives accessible to the masses.
