Mark Haskell Smith – Biography

 

Mark Haskell Smith is a writer living in Los Angeles California. 

Published fiction includes the novel MOIST (St. Martin’s Press, 2002) and the novel DELICIOUS (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2005).   

He has written the screenplay for PLAYING GOD (Touchstone Pictures, 1997) and was co-screenwriter of the Brazilian film A PARTILHA (Columbia/TriStar/Globo Films, 2001) that won the Audience Award for Best Picture and the Crystal Lens Award for Best Screenplay at the Miami Brazilian Film Festival in 2001.  He has also done uncredited work on such films as ANACONDA, EXCESS BAGGAGE, and INSPECTOR GADGET among others.

Television credits include the original pilot HONOLULU CRU (ABC/Touchstone 1998), the Bahamas based PARADISE (CBS/Paramount) with director Barry Sonnenfeld, Consulting Producer on the series THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (CBS) and MARTIAL LAW (CBS), as well as numerous teleplays.   

In feature development he has adapted his novel MOIST for Jinks/Cohen Productions, Dreamworks and director Barry Sonnenfeld; T.C. Boyle’s PEEP HALL for Bill Mechanic’s Pandemonium Productions; Dave Ferrell’s novel “Screwball” into the script THE UNNATURAL for Danny DeVito’s Jersey Films and Universal; and the South Korean film MARRYING THE MAFIA for Warner Brothers.

 

He has spoken on several panels at conferences including the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Bouchercon, and Left Coast Crime; and has taught writing workshops at the Book Passage Mystery Writer’s Conference in San Francisco and Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena.

 

He likes Mexican food.  He is allergic to red wine.
