Ceramic Sculpture: Tradition to Experimentation

Major areas of study include processes and techniques of ceramic sculpture, drawing, 2- and 3-dimensional design, and ceramic art history.
Class Standing: Sophomores or above; transfer students welcome.
Prerequisites: One quarter college level ceramic course required, drawing experience recommended.
This is an intensive program for intermediate to advanced students in ceramic sculpture. Working from a variety of sources as points of departure, the course will explore 2- and 3-dimensional approaches to using clay, glazes and firings as a means to fusing content and process. The study will incorporate drawing, design and ceramic art history, past to present, as supplements to studio work. Ceramic chemistry and kiln operation will also be included. Emphasis will be on the development of skills, craft and technique, and on the individual student’s ability to approach his or her work with an experimental attitude.
