Class Standing: This all-level program accepts up to 37% freshmen as well as supporting and encouraging those ready for advanced work.
The program will focus on Western classical ballet and Indian classical Orissi dance in intensive workshops. Students will be required to participate in both these dance styles at the Beginning level. However, more advanced students will have the opportunity to work in either of the two workshops during the week. We will study the works of noted dance choreographers, such as Katherine Dunham, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, George Balanchine, Chandralekha, Uday Shankar, and others. We will also do some workshops in other world dance forms. The interactive lectures will include presentations and visuals. The seminars will be both discussions and hands-on movement. Students will be required to write response papers to the readings during the quarter. At the end of the quarter, there will be a public performance of an integrative historical narrative.
