Internships: Community-Based Learning

Class Standing: Sophomores or above; transfer students welcome.

Prerequisites: Minimum of sophomore standing (transfer students are welcome) and at least two quarters of academic preparation related to the proposed area of study.

Faculty will sponsor a limited number of internship learning contracts for well-prepared students. Possible major areas for sponsorship of student internship projects include bilingual education/ literacy and ESL, social services organizations and schools serving Latino/a populations, immigrants’ rights organizations, agriculture and food security, homelessness and affordable housing, non-profit organizations, working across cultural differences, Latin American cultural studies, feminist and gender/LBGTQ studies, reproductive rights, and others. Students may enroll for any number of credits from 4 to 16.

Faculty has a a broad familiarity with local organizations and resources, particularly in Thurston County, as well as experience working with students from across the curriculum who are interested in integrating and applying their learning through community-based research, learning and activism.

Interested students should contact Alice Nelson by e-mail (nelsona@evergreen.edu) or meet with her at the Academic Fair on March 2, 2010. To obtain sponsorship, students must first electronically submit a project proposal/draft Internship Learning Contract.

Credits: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 16 per quarter

Internship Possibilities: Spring only.
