Prerequisites: In order to be considered for this advanced program, students should have successfully completed Mediaworks (the entry-level program in media studies at Evergreen) or its equivalent (i.e. , approximately a year of media skill training, media history and media theory), or completed another interdisciplinary media program at Evergreen.

The focus of Media Artists Studio is on the development of each student's own personal style and creative approach to work with moving images and sound. Students who are interested in experimental film and digital video production, documentary, new media, sound design, writing, photography, collaboration, contemporary media history and theory are invited to join this learning community of media artists. This program is designed for students who have already developed some expertise in media production, are familiar with aspects of media theory and wish to do advanced production work that may have developed out of previous academic projects and/or programs.

Media Artists Studio offers students the opportunity to do independent work with the support of a learning community, with an emphasis on the critique process as student work evolves. Students in the program during winter quarter will determine additional curricular activities as a group when the quarter begins. This means that the group may decide to develop their skills in particular areas (possibilities include cinematography, audio, web presence and portfolio, etc.) The group may also choose to do research presentations and/or a collaborative project - or may decide to focus more intensively on individual, independent production and research. Field trips may also be planned by the group. Student work will be brought back to the group for critique sessions scheduled to provide important peer feedback and perspective on individual academic development.

The nature of "experimental" media requires a period of germination for new ideas, approaches, and impulses to emerge. During the fall quarter students in the program took time for development and reflection. Students entering the program winter quarter are expected to do research and writing to inform media projects they will develop through winter and spring quarters. Each student or team of students (for collaborative projects) will do extensive pre-production planning and research for a major film or digital project to be completed by the end of the academic year. One quarter projects are also possible, but must include research, proposal development, production and editing appropriate to the ten week schedule. Students will be required to develop an Independent Learning Plan that details the work they will complete during winter quarter.

During winter quarter, students will acquire all their images and production elements for their projects, which could involve production work off campus for an extended period. Students are encouraged to think creatively and broadly about their subject matter and will be able to propose media projects that may require travel to other areas of the United States or even abroad. During spring quarter each student will complete post-production work, finalize their artist's portfolio, explore ways to sustain their work as media artists and participate in a public screening of their work.

We will utilize online resources such as blogs, artist websites, and streaming media to create a virtual learning community to support and integrate our work. We will study web design and develop skills in DVD authoring to create portfolio and proposal documentation pieces.
