Program Description

Student Originated Studies: Hegel's _Phenomenology of Spirit_

NEW! Last Updated: 11/23/2009

Winter quarter

Faculty: Kathleen Eamon philosophy

Major areas of study include philosophy.

Class Standing: Sophomores or above; transfer students welcome.

This is an opportunity for students to work through one of the most important and complex works in the history of western philosophy, Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. Hegel’s thought attempts to deal with what he takes to be the alienation of the modern subject from the project and products of education and culture. This model of alienation and the dialectic approach it yields have had a long history of influence, starting with Marx and continuing through the existentialists and the development of critical theory.

In this student-directed forum, students will read Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, beginning with the 'Introduction' and moving as far as ten weeks of immersive work will allow. Students will meet with Kathleen Eamon at least once a week for a close reading session. Students will likewise participate in one seminar a week without faculty presence, as well as weekly a student-run writing practicum and critique session. Occasional coordinated sessions with students from the fulltime coordinated studies program Logopoesis will be required. Some preparatory background in any one of the areas of philosophy, critical theory, or Marxist thought is advised.

The program hours will be Tuesdays, 1-5, and Thursdays, 1-5.
