Gateways: Popular Education

Summer 2014 quarter

Taught by

English literature, theater studies

Gateways offers Evergreen students the opportunity to mentor and learn with incarcerated young men at Green Hill, a medium/maximum-security prison. Weekly learning will be guided by the practice of popular education; subjects covered will vary based on the interests of both Evergreen students and incarcerated students.

This course is ideal for students who have worked with Gateways in the past or who are seeking admission to the 14-15 Gateways program. Students who have not worked with Gateways should contact the instructor; a background check is required to work as a volunteer at the prison. Students who, for any reason, do not pass the background check will be given other opportunities to earn credit supporting the incarcerated students.

Students will earn 16 credits if they attend 3 days a week (including 2 prison visits) for 10 weeks.

They will earn 8 credits if they attend 3 days a week (including 2 prison visits) for 5 weeks (in either first or second session).

They can also earn 8 credits if they attend 2 days a week (1 prison visit) for 10 weeks.

And they can earn 4 credits if they attend 2 days a week (1 prison visit) for 5 weeks (in either first or second session).
