Personal Finance and Investing

The first part of this course looks at the problems and techniques of personal financial planning.  Topics covered include managing personal cash income, controlling expenditures; dealing with inflation and recession; taxes, insurance, annuities, credit, budgeting, home ownership, bank accounts, debt abatement and how to manage credit reporting and credit scores.   The second part of this course is an in-depth examination of long-term value investment decisions.  The material covered includes the theories and techniques employed in investment analyses and portfolio management decisions.

This course is a hands-on interactive class designed to help students understand the mechanics and importance of managing personal finances, credit, and value investing for the future.  Students will develop an understanding of the investment markets, with all their potential and their warts.  Students will gain an appreciation for a basic understanding how economics influence/shape markets.  Students will learn about the stock market using proven business like principles within a value-investing framework.  Each student will create and manage a mock investment portfolio.
