Readings in Art and Cybernetics

This class will meet once a week to discuss a series of readings that address art, cybernetics, and their interrelationship.  The quarter will end with participation in the conference of the American Society for Cybernetics (in Olympia) during week 10.

The reading list will contain:

  • Humberto Maturana: Cognitive Strategies ; Ontology of Observing
  • Heinz von Foerster : Perception of the Future ; Ethics and 2nd order Cybernetics ; From Stimulus to Symbol: The Economy of Biological Computation
  • Gertrude Stein : What are Masterpieces and Why Are there so few of them? ; Composition as Explanation ; Tender Buttons
  • Oscar Wilde: The Decay of Lying
  • Herbert Brün: Drawing Distinctions Links Contradiction and " ... to hold discourse --- at least --- with a computer ..."

Students will be asked to write a short paper making connections between the readings.
