Insects are by far the most diverse group of terrestrial animals. The variety in form, behavior and ecological niches of insects is astounding, and they play a role in every aspect of the ecosystems we live in – affecting disease ecology, agricultural production, plant sex, decomposition… the list is enormous. The Relentless Entomology program provides an opportunity for students to learn advanced insect taxonomy, ecology, field techniques, and specimen preservation. Each class session includes outdoor field work in various ecosystems near the Evergreen campus. We will use multiple techniques for collecting and observing insects, from the canopy to the soil. We will keep illustrated field notebooks, emphasizing the importance of careful observation of morphology and behavior as learning and identification tools. Students will develop skills in museum specimen curation by preserving, labeling, and presenting specimens in displays and museum drawers. Specimens collected during the class will be used to supplement the college’s teaching collection. There will be two overnight field trips, one to eastern Washington July 8-10 (2 nights), and one in western Washington August 5-7 (two nights). Up to 8 upper division credits are available.
