Social Psychology: On the Margins, The Paradox of Community (at Grays Harbor College)

Spring 2016 quarter

Taught by

psychology

What constitutes your community? When you speak about “the community” who is included? In this 4-credit class we will examine social constructs of in-group/out-group, and think deeply about the development of our individual ideas concerning control and belonging. Once defined, who is on the margins, or entirely left out of community?  Students will have opportunities to test long-held assumptions about members of the human family who have been impacted by the marginalizing effects of conditions such as homelessness, addiction and incarceration.
