INFORMATION UPDATE AND NEWS
January 1997
The Field School to Chile is almost ready to go. Those who are still interested in participating in this exciting academic experience abroad, please take note of the following advisements:
1. In order to qualify for this opportunity, students are required to pay a $150 deposit by February 16, within normal business hours at Evergreen. The check must be made out to TESC, and write, Field School to Chile, in the memo box at the bottom of your check, to ensure you have made payment correctly. Please present the check to faculty member, Jorge Gilbert at Library Building 2107 in person. If necessary, you can leave a voice mail message to make an appointment to talk with him at extension 6740.
2. An organizational meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 5, at 1.00 pm at Library 2107. Those students interested in the Field School to Chile but cannot attend the meeting should notify the faculty in advance, to ensure they will receive consideration in the final selection of participants for the program. In this meeting several important aspects of the trip will be discussed including; academic projects, program contents, and other important organizational and logistical matters.
3. The social contract mandated for TESC will apply for the duration of the Field School to Chile. Students are advised to be flexible and considerate of the needs and concerns of the group as well as individuals as occasions develop during the course of travel and work.
4. Based on the latest information available, the cost of the airfare ticket is $1,015 per person--we are still searching for a lower rate. Nontheless, students are still required to pay the full amount of $1,015, as currently listed by March 15 deadline. Please note that this particular arrengement regarding tickets is entirely independent of TESC. The faculty will provide information for how to proceed regarding this matter, to ensure the students will receive a reduced group rate.
5. By April 1st, students who are going to Chile are required to pay the remainder of expenses for the Field School, that is, $800. This amount must be paid in full to TESC's cahier before leaving the country. The College strongly recommends that students pay this amount in cash or credit card.
6. Finally, it is important that students interested in this Field School to Chile begin organzing themselves as a collective (be aware you will, of necessity live and work in groups). Information about the country, its institutions, its history and culture will be provided in the group meetings. Discussions about the academic components of the program, bibliographies, and a tentative working schedules will be also discussed. Finally, students will have the opportunity to negotiate the topics and structure of their research projects, and also discuss the academic interests and goals they would like to address during their stay in Chile, with the faculty.
