YE PROGRAMME COVENANT

I, ___________________________________, an adult capable of making decisions, do hereby give my hand and seal to the following conditions of academic life in "Six Months With Shakespeare":

1. Attentive civility: Inquiry, the aim of the program, requires that students and faculty members practice attentive civility. Attentive civility maintains the conditions for an open and continuing dialogue. Some of its requisites are focused consciousness, active listening, thoughtful questioning, and public participation. Attentive civility is not the same as total comfort. It means making dialogue and inquiry work, even when this is challenging.

2. Participation: Students and faculty will attend and participate in all sessions, prepared by having read all the material, unless called away by illness, emergency, or professional obligation. (Please phone your faculty member and leave a message if you can't come to class.) Participation means public, outspoken participation, not just active listening. In group work, participation in support of one's colleagues is especially important.

3. Papers: Students must submit all papers (proofread, corrected, and double-space typed) on time, and faculty must attend to students' written work within a reasonable period of time.

4. Portfolio: Everyone will keep a portfolio of completed work.

5. Evaluations: Students' self-evaluations and faculty evaluations are required. Conferences must be held and evaluations must be handed in during evaluation week. The faculty member will produce a written evaluation at the time of the conference.

6. Credit: A student will receive academic credit each quarter for satisfactory completion of all requirements. Incompletes can be granted only for illness or emergency (not just because the work didn't get done). Because the work of the program cannot be subdivided into smaller components, no partial credit will be awarded for the quarter. Plagiarism, violation of the covenant, missing classes, failure to complete an assignment, or completing an assignment after the due date without an incomplete, and not completing the evaluation process, all constitute grounds for denial of credit. The faculty make credit decisions at the end of each quarter. Any alteration of program requirements and understandings (deadlines, credit, etc.) requires consultation and agreement between faculty members.

7. Conflict resolution: Conflict resolution begins by talking face-to-face with the other parties. If necessary, meet for mediation with the next higher level in the college's organization (seminar leader, program coordinator, dean, etc.). It is not OK to skip levels.

I have read the materials describing the program, understand them, and accept the Program Covenant.
