The skills learned in the study of beginning journalism are relevant to producing smooth, coherent prose. In the initial phase of the program, students will undertake learning the discipline of how to write unembellished prose while concentrating on creating the lead. The lead is the opening paragraph of the news story where the reader gets the sense of what the story is going to be about. This requires writing tightly in short, pithy phrases with the important facts packed into the top of the story. Later on when we begin the study of Literary Journalism, we will concentrate on "not giving the game away" as we do in basic newswriting style.
