Date Assigned: Monday, April 12, 1999
Date to turn in: Thursday, April 15, 1999
Section 13.4 - 1,5,7,9, 11, 19, 23, 29
Section 13.5 - 1, 3, 5, 9
Read section 13.6 and write a 100 word summary of it.
General Goals for the class:
Section 13.4 is about how to find rates of change in arbitrary directions. In 13.2 we found partial derivatives which were rates of change in the i and j directions. Now we find rates of change in directions such as in the direction of the vector i + 2j - 3k. We then define the gradient and use it to find directional derivatives
Section 13.5 is a repeat of the same stuff for functions of 3 or more variables. At this point we must rely more and more on the formulas as our geometric intuition begins to fail.
