Chemistry Review Assignment #5
Due Friday, May5

Kotz & Treichel

    Chapter 18: 15, 25, 27, 39, 43, 59, 63, 67

Additional Problems:

1) What is the pH of a 2.0 x 10-7 M solution of KOH?

2) What is the ratio of acetate ion to acetic acid in a solution that has a pH of 5.0?

3) From D.C. Harris, "Quantitative Chemical Analysis"

This problem demonstrates what would happen if charge balance did not exist in solution. The force, in newtons, between two charges q1 and q2, in coulombs, is:

F = -(8.988 x 109) q1q2/r2

where r is the distance in meters between the two charges. What is the force between two beakers separated by 1.5 m if one beaker contains 250 mL of solution with 1.0 x 10-6 M excess negative charge and the other has 250 mL of 1.0 x 10-6 M positive charge? Note that there are 96,480 C per mol of electrons.

Convert this force to pounds, using the conversion, 1 N = 0.2248 pounds.
