Guidelines for Writing Self Evaluations
The self evaluation is a synopsis of your experience in the program, specifically related to your own work and learning. A formal self evaluation is expected at the end of the program. In preparation for this we would like you to write a draft self evaluation based on this first quarter. Please try and address the following points when writing your self evaluation. It is preferable that you keep your evaluation to less than one page.
- What were your goals and expectations coming into the program? How well did the program meet these? How well did you meet the goals and expectations of the program?
- What have you learned in the program? This is not a description of the syllabus, but a statement about what you have come to understand and how you have integrated it with your previous knowledge.
- Mention your academic skills and how you are making use of your strengths. Also indicate what you perceive your weaknesses to be and how you are working on developing these within the program.
- Discuss what your accomplishments have been and what you are proud of having achieved or anything that captured your interest or fascinated you. Also describe what you have found difficult and challenging and indicate how you have gone about dealing with these challenges.
- Make specific reference to different parts of the program, eg seminars, labs, workshops, lectures and indicate what you have gained from these and which type of learning is most suited to you and why. It is a good idea to make reference to specific labs, lectures, topics or readings that have most influenced you.
- Indicate what your future plans are – will you be continuing in the program? What do to you expect or hope to achieve in the next quarter? What are your long term plans and how do they relate to Matter and Motion?
For planning it is important that we know what parts of the course people will be enrolling in next quarter. If you wish to enrol in only part of the program please indicate which parts these at the end of your self evaluation and come and talk to us about it.
