Matter & Motion 2000

Spring Review Assignment #3

Due Wednesday, April 18, 5:00

Matter & Motion Problem:

1) For each of the following sources of radiation, calculate the total energy density (I) and estimate the fraction of energy in the visible range (400-700 nm). Assume each acts as a blackbody radiator. You can approach this by calculating the definite integral of I = f (l,T) in the visible range (use Mathematica), or by plotting the spectral distribution in Excel and performing a Riemann sum over the wavelength range of interest. In either case, print your results and turn in along with the rest of the assignment.

    a: glowing coals in a fireplace (T = 1000 K)
    b: filament of an incandescent bulb (T = 2500 K)
    c: surface of the sun (T = 6000 K)
