Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD)

• Definition: Students whose behavior falls considerably outside the norm have emotional/behavioral disorders.

• Key Characteristics:

Broad Classifications:

1. Externalizing Behaviors (tend to interfere with others): aggression, hitting, lack of attention, impulsivity
2. Internalizing Behaviors (tend to be distressing to the child and their families): shyness, withdrawal, depression, fears/phobia, anxiety 

Major Subtypes of Externalizing/Internalizing:

·        Conduct Disorders and Aggression

(hitting, fighting, acting defiant or disobedient)

·        Hyperactivity

(restless, overactive)

·        Socialized Aggression

(antisocial, harass, damage property)

·        Pervasive Development Disorder

(unusual ideas and behaviors, ignore/resist affection)

·        Immaturity

(poor concentration/coordination)

·        Depression

(sad, lonely, complains)

·        Anxiety-Withdrawal

(extreme worry/fearfulness, seclusive)

Key Accommodations for Students with EBD

·              Maintain an organized classroom

·              Establish positive relationships that form trust

·              Consistently follow through with rules and consequences

·              Choose battles wisely

·              Involve parents

·              Use conflict reports

·              Guide students toward making personal goals

·              Provide instruction that allows all students to learn and succeed (academically and socially)

·              Provide high interest/relevant materials and activities

·              Point out student “models” for other students to emulate
