Requirements for rewritten essays

An acceptable rewrite must meet these conditions:

  • At the top of the page, state both the assigned question and the thesis you offer as an answer. For example, the second essay for Group B addresses the question, "What is the role and value of passion in Seneca's political thought? In what way is his understanding of its particular role different from or similar to Aristotle's?"  An appropriate thesis might be, “Both Seneca and Aristotle view unbridled passion as destructive in civil society, but only Seneca would remove passion from civic life entirely.”
  • Be certain that your essay meets the following standards, with few exceptions:
    • Each paragraph and each sentence bears an evident relationship to the thesis of the essay.
    • All sentence fragments have been eliminated.
    • Spelling is accurate.
    • Citations of texts are clear and accurate.

We call these standards to your attention because frequently we have encountered essays that fail to meet them.  Such essays cannot be said to satisfy minimal standards for college level writing.

These are matters you can address with writing tutors, and should, if they are not fully under your control.
