Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Valerie Gore

I am a new student to Evergreen transferring from South Puget Sound in the upside down Bachelor’s program. I had an opportunity for a "Career" making position which I did not get because I had not completed my BA degree. Needless to say I have been "Inspired"!

My family and I reside on a small farm in the Boistfort Valley where we raise organic beef and vegetables, artichokes are a key crop for us Yum!. The environment has always been a passion for me. I participate in a citizen's activist group in the pursuit of the "Preservation of Agriculture and Forest Lands". Recently I worked with other local farmers in Lewis County in the creation of the new Lewis County Farmers Market.

I firmly believe that it is my responsibility as a human being to protect and preserve the way of life for all other living beings: be them winged, finned, furred, scaled, four legged or two. Early cultures and religions are of particular interest to me specifically the Matriarchal societies.

Season of Winter

Floods

Below is a photo of the river in front of my home taken from the bridge during our recent flood in early January. Not only was it a bit scary but it was also totally intense show of natures power. Even the dog stayed huddled next to the house with his tail between his legs. I thought that must have been how early man and women felt about the natural phenomons that occured in their world before they were studied and explained.

Snow

This snow scupture was created by my son during our early Winter first Snow. It's strange how as children we get all excited to be able to go out side to play in the snow, even the wet stuff. As adults its for the most part an inconvience such as driving conditions or concens of loss of electric and or water.

This photo is from our most recent family mini vacation to White Pass. The scene is of fortress building and subsequent snowball fights. I did not particpate in the snowball fight however I did learn how to downhill ski, I'm hooked, love it and can't wait for a chance to do it again.
