The Shadow of the Enlightenment

Explore the way gender is constructed in Candide by comparing two incidents or two characters.

Consider the ways in which language is linked to identity in our readings this week. You can consider word choice, linguistic resources of speakers and writers, the choice of a particular language, or other ways of talking about language.

Comment on order in the Ancien Régime drawing from at least two of the following: Stacey’s lecture on Monday, Oct. 9 and Chapter 1, 2, or 3 of the Cat Massacre. Examine symbols, class, religion, and/or popular culture.

"What do the terms "virtue" and "freedom" mean in Letters from a Peruvian Woman and The Persian Letters? What message do the endings of these books have about these ideas?"

In order to understand the impact of the Enlightenment, it is essential to understand the dissemination of ideas. Consider the role of the writer in this context, and issues of identity, gender, power, and patronage.

Both Chartier and Darnton have given extended arguments about whether or not books make revolutions. What do you think? Do you agree with one of them or do you have some other ideas?

Select one of the key concepts we are examining as we study the French revolution--Liberty, Equality, or Fraternity--and explore what it means in 18th century France drawing on your texts. Cite pages of one or more text and elaborate on your ideas.

What were the specific struggles with language that Denise experienced? What do her struggles have to do with her identity? How might you explain those struggles as a budding sociolinguist?
