We strongly suggest that you see the Battle of Algiers, an important film that will help you understand the war France led against Algeria in the attempt to keep it as a department of France.  There is a new version available, but the old one is still very powerful.

You may want to see some of these films as a way of continuing your work in French language acquisition and also to learn more about French identity. If you would like to suggest others, please do so!

Contemporary:  Amélie, Delicatessen, Caché (references to the Algerian war), Un Coeur en Hiver (A Heart in Winter)

Humorous: L’Auberge Espagnole; Le Placard (The Closet); Bon Voyage

Rural France: Jean de Florette; Manon des Sources

French Revolution: Danton; La Nuit de Varennes

19th Century topics: La Veuve de St. Pierre; Le hussard sur le toit (The Horseman on the Roof); Camille Claudel; L’Histoire d’Adèle H.

World War I:  Joyeux Noel, Un long dimanche de fiancailles (A Very Long Engagement); La Victoire en chantant (Black & White in Color)

Between the World Wars:  La règle du jeu (Rules of the Game)

World War II:  Au revoir les enfants; A Love to Hide (gays and French collaboration)

New Wave:  A bout de soufflé (Breathless); Jules et Jim
