Spring Quarter schedule and syllabus

Submitted by scheuers on Thu, 03/22/2007 - 4:30pm.

The schedule and syllabus for spring quarter is attached here. It explains your options for Tuesdays and Fridays. Note the first program meeting is Tuesday at 9 am; the space scheduling web site lists the first meeting at 8 am Monday in the art studio, but that is an artifact of having the space reserved for you all week long. While we will not discuss the first seminar book (Small Wonder) until week 2, we recommend that you start the reading the books over break to have a relatively calm quarter.

Have a great spring break. We are looking forward to a positive and rewarding spring quarter!

Check the links below for these two documents. Also...students who are making Powerpoint presentations should arrive at our session at least 10 minutes before the session begins so that we can get the presentations ready.

Statistics lab files

Submitted by scheuers on Sun, 03/04/2007 - 7:41pm.

LAB DUE DATE MODIFIED!!! Both labs are due at 9 am on Wednesday of week 10.

For Week 9 lab, bring a hard copy of both statistics lab reports for peer reivew.

Note that a 7th file (correlation-regression lab intro) has been added that defines correlation, regression, 'r', R-squared, and gives an example of how to introduce the analyses done in the lab report.

Attached are 6 files that will be useful for completing the 2 statistics lab reports. Overall instructions are in the file "statistics lab report instructions..." For the correlation and regression lab report, the tree density and DBH data is in the file "Site visit DBH data...", Yoshiya's analysis is in the file "Moritani, Yoshiya DBH analysis."  The week 8 lab lecture presentation on statistical testing, study design and t-test theory and practice are in the "statistical testing, week 8 lab presentation" file. Further background information on t-test theory and instructions for using Excel for the t-test lab report is in the "t-test theory and instructions" file. It lists how to use Excel to do 2-sided t-tests to compare the mean lifespan of groups from the cemetery lab data. The "t-test cemetery data fake" file is the ficticious data presented in lab. It gives an example of cemetery data and how the data columns of cemetery groups are set up.

Supplementary Material for Week 9 Expressive Assignment

Submitted by francisk on Fri, 03/02/2007 - 8:40pm.
For students who seek further ideas for this week's expressive assignment, I've attached the slide show of images related to the "land ethic" that I presented to the photography section this morning. It includes portraits of Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson, as well as some additional portraits by a few of my favorite artists and art projects. Enjoy!

Community Action Discussion forum created

Submitted by scheuers on Tue, 02/27/2007 - 4:54pm.
The students in Lucia's seminar group created the idea of having a forum for the Visualizing Ecology learning community to share ideas on environmental problems and potential action based solutions. The discussion forum is housed under Forums, at the bottom of Steve's seminar group. Everyone is welcome to post and reply. Making change happen, one post at a time!

Research Papers and Monday Night Film Break

Submitted by francisk on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 11:24am.

A reminder that a full rough draft of the research paper is due on Tuesday. Please bring a paper copy to lecture on Tuesday morning. We will be doing a detailed peer review of the paper during lecture. If you need a break in the midst of paper writing, we have a film on Monday night that should do the trick: "Greendale"--a film that features music and story by Neil Young. Check out the film's website at http://www.neilyoung.com/greendale_frames.html and reviews at http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/movieandtour.htm. Lecture Hall 2, 7:30 pm
