Species Evolution -Tyler Savin

The evolution of species is a concept that explains where all species derived from. Though it is only a theory, the proof and ideas behind it have me convinced that the steps of evolution are most likely to have occurred just as Charles Darwin explains. Darwin explains evolution in his writing called, The Origin Of Species . Many people question the theory of evolution either because they believe in a more religious creation or the theory just seems so abstract and questionable. There is no living obvious proof of this theory anywhere so it seems easy to dismiss from our thoughts. Knowing how the living species of today were created is something that would give people a better understanding of where they came from and a prediction of what the future may be for humans and other species physically and biologically. This would contradict endless years of previous beliefs.

The belief that all beings were created by a god or a creator with an idea or design in mind has struck the earth for thousands of years. The reason people believe this rather than the evolution theory is because they may be a strong believer of the creation by God. In a lot of cases I don’t think people believe in evolution because the only proof scientist have is scientific evidence that not very many people would take the time or have to patients to learn and observe. One reason for this is that the human species has not been around long enough to notice an evolution of species. “For the lapse of time has been so great as to be utterly inappreciable by the human intellect.” Because no human has ever lived long enough to see the change or evolution of any other species there is no belief. But it does make sense when you consider that some of the oldest findings with pictures or bones of lost individuals closely resemble the current look of species. This leads people to believe that there may not be changes such as Darwin’s theory states.

The most cold hard evidence of Darwin’s evolution theory lies in geology. “Geology plainly declares that all species have changed; and they have changed in the manner which my theory requires, for they have changed slowly and in a graduated manner.” Fossils and imprints of the design of specie’s bones could be the closest thing to visual evidence scientist have to prove the theory of evolution. I think the fact that these bones and prints could be found in different layers of our earths crust is proof enough that this did happen over millions of years. If you look at the many visuals scientist have created you can easily see the graduated change in the look of species. Everyone has seen the picture of man when he first started to stand upright. It was all hunched over and short with lots of hair. But slowly you can see it start to “evolve” into the present look of man. Just like Darwin’s theory states man has evolved to better be suited to our needs. We have shown that the age of death in man has increased with the time of evolution and standing fully upright has increased our maneuverability and made us into the finely tuned being we are today.

“With respect to existing forms, we should remember that we have no right to expect (excepting in rare cases) to discover directly connecting links between them, but only between each and some extinct and supplanted form.” I think this is the most important quote made by Darwin. The fact that we may expect to see the changes that are taking place only within the current generation of species is unrealistic. I think the only way for us to see the change would be to have all the species that ever existed on this earth and put them in order from when they derived and when they became extinct or evolved into another species. Thought this is really quite impossible I think that this would be the proof needed to prove to people. Using geology and science to create ideas to fill in the missing gaps of the evolutionary chain is something that I think is very important to show the world where humans really came from. After all as humans we are the most intellectually smart beings on the planet or even in the universe as we know it. The thought that we just suddenly appeared or were created this way is unrealistic. On the other hand the theory that humans slowly evolved from some other very simple being into the complex humans we are today, seems more pleas able than not.
