The following readings are listed in roughly the order we will read them in class. Please use the editions you find in the bookstore (which match those listed below). Melville, Dana and Conrad are all out of copyright, which makes them inexpensive and available in many editions-don't skimp-buy the version we'll all use! The main work in studying literature is CLOSE READING, which means we need to be able to discuss passages together easily-don't make it difficult by purchasing different versions. In the case of Melville's Billy Budd the variations are major and will significantly influence your interpretation of the text.
