WEEK 10

TUESDAY AM/PM - Final Presentations of the Cluster Research Projects will be on Tuesday, March 11 (week 10). They will take place in Com 110 during the morning and afternoon. Also bring your final draft of your research paper along with the most recently edited draft containing feedback you got from peers and/or the writing center. There are no more book seminars this quarter.*

WEDNESDAY - IN THE RECITAL HALL - Guest Lecture/workshop on myth and story with Rebecca Chamberlain.

THURSDAY AM - In the Recital Hall - Self Evaluation writing workshop. Remember, you'll have your portfolio with you on Thursday, so that will be a rich source for material that is helpful in writing your Self-Evaluation. This will be followed by the PROGRAM POTLUCK LUNCH!

 

*Here’s how the TUESDAY Research Presentations will work:
Your cluster group will arrange enough chairs in a semi-circle for each member of your group to have a seat. You will also include one extra chair which can be used later during the question and answer portion of your presentation. This is the "fishbowl".

Your group should have appointed a moderator who will introduce the topic. The introduction is three minutes maximum in length. Then, the other members of the cluster will each present an overview of their papers for three minutes maximum (each). This is followed by a summary moderator, who has two minutes maximum to wrap up the presentation. You will have a total of [3 + (3 X the number of members) +2] minutes as a group. The audience outside the fishbowl listens to all of this.

The opening moderator should remember to state the cluster research topic as part of the opening presentation. As each of you describe your individual paper, you should make sure to share the following:
• Your question and thesis
• Your general findings
• The relevance of your findings

You may have your paper with you during the presentation, but AVOID READING IT. You need to prepare well in advance to be able to talk as an expert about your topic.

The summary moderator should invite members of the audience to sit in the empty chair and ask questions and engage in a conversation about the topic, which will be answered in a seminar style discussion by the cluster members. When the person's question has been answered, the chair may be taken by another person to ask another question.

In order to prepare the moderators, your cluster group should meet together and practice the above assignment, with each of you discussing your paper. Then, together, you should notice crossovers and similarities as well as differences and help the moderator prepare a strong introduction for your cluster group. Avoid having identical material presented by the participants, but it is often powerful to point out where similarities occur.

After your group is finished presenting, you will have until Thursday morning to do the following:
• Sit down with the evaluation criteria you created earlier in the quarter and evaluate each member according to these criteria.
• Write up your feedback in the form of a letter to each of the people in your cluster group. Make three copies: one for yourself, one for the other person, one for the seminar leader of the person you evaluated. DO NOT PUT MORE THAN ONE PERSON’S EVALUATION ON ONE SHEET OF PAPER!
• Set aside a substantial piece of time to sit with your cluster group and give and receive feedback. Give each person two copies of the written letter you wrote to them.

• When this is finished, each of you is responsible to STAPLE YOUR EVALUATIONS FROM YOUR PEERS TOGETHER and turn them into your seminar leader. Cynthia’s students will give their paperwork to Terry who will collect them and turn them in to her when she returns.

For Thursday of Week 10, prepare a portfolio containing a minimum of the following:

  • Seminar, lecture, workshop, and book notes
  • All writing (Psychology of 2 Artworks, Diversity writing, Personal experience with prejudice, 5th week paper prospectus, Focus the Nation response, Week 7 prospectus, Final Research Paper)
  • Your Journal
  • Cluster and Peer group meeting notes (time, location, content covered). You were not obligated to meet with your Peer Groups, so that is optional.
  • Peer Feedback from Research Cluster Group members
