Subject: Foundation Activity Grants Available for Students

STUDENTS: ACTIVITY GRANT FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Foundation Activity Grant applications are due October 5 at 5 p.m.

Foundation Activity Grants are offered by The Evergreen State College Foundation and administered by the Academic Grants office. This program supports the projects of individual students, student teams, and student-faculty teams. Faculty may participate as part of a student team. Activity Grant projects are usually carried out in conjunction with academic programs and all projects must have at least one faculty sponsor.

Over the years the program has supported a variety of efforts, including theatrical productions, art projects and exhibitions, scientific research, video and film productions, implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, student literary magazines, and expenses for students to attend professional conferences and present their work.

The maximum award per student is $1,000.  Teams of two students may apply for up to $2,000, and three or more students may apply for up to $3,000 total for a project. The Foundation can award about 7 to 10 students each fall, winter and spring quarter. We expect considerable competition for these awards.

Application procedures

To apply, submit a complete application by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 5 to the Academic Grants office, Seminar 2 D3105. This deadline is firm; applications that are incomplete or that are submitted after 5 p.m. on October 5 will not be considered. The entire application packet must be typed. It must include:
A completed Foundation Activity Grant application form. An electronic copy of the form may be downloaded: (Word  <http://www.evergreen.edu/sponsoredresearch/docs/activitygrantapplication.doc> | PDF <http://www.evergreen.edu/sponsoredresearch/docs/activitygrantapplication.pdf> ). To fill in the form using Word software, type your entry in the gray shaded fields. Use the tab key or your mouse to move between fields. You may need to unprotect the document in the Word Tools menu. You can also download forms at the Foundation Activity Grant web site: http://www.evergreen.edu/sponsoredresearch/foundationactivitygrants.htm.
A two-page proposal narrative that includes:
-        A brief project description with a timeline specifying key milestones and anticipated completion date.
-        An explanation of how the proposed project is important to the applicant's Evergreen career (or the careers of the applicant team): What education or experiences qualifies the applicant to complete the project? How will the project enhance the applicant's knowledge and abilities? How will it further the applicant's goals for future work (academic, personal, volunteer, or employment)?
-        A discussion of how the applicant will hold to one or more of Evergreen's five core teaching and learning values in completing the project: interdisciplinary study, collaborative learning, learning across significant differences, personal engagement, linking theory with practical applications.
-        An explanation of the project's significance. Some things to consider: What questions will the project attempt to answer? What broader needs will it address — at Evergreen or beyond the college? What will be the project's legacy — intellectual, social, or artistic?
A budget with enough detail for a reviewer to understand the major costs of the project. The budget should include enough information about how costs were determined for reviewers to assess if the requested award is reasonable and necessary.
Additional supporting materials are not required, but you may submit slides, photographs, portfolio samples, etc. for review. If you submit anything you want back, please indicate so with a note on the item itself. It is up to you to pick up those items after grants have been announced. Items may be claimed from Dorothea Collins  <mailto:dcollins@evergreen.edu?subject=Foundation%20Activity%20Grants> in Seminar 2 D3105.

E-mail submissions are preferred. Send your electronic applications to actgrant@evergreen.edu. You may also submit a hard copy of your application and/or any supporting documents in person or by regular mail to Dorothea Collins, Seminar 2, D3105. Your application must be received (not postmarked) by the deadline.

Spring Activity Grant award announcements will be made around October 19. Please plan your projects accordingly.

Academic Grants staff will offer a workshop in Tacoma and in Olympia with tips for writing Activity Grant proposals.

Subject: Re: Earthquake in Peru

Hola:
I had one contract student who had already returned to the US his name is Andrew Hines.
Matt West just graduated and will join the Peace Corps in Peru. He will travel next month.

The Northern part of Peru has not been affected at all. Everything has happened in places south from Lima. My friends and relatives live in Lima and Guadalupe in the Northern region near Cajamarca, La Libertad and Lambayeque. As far as I know they are fine. All my Evergreen students spend most of their time in Guadalupe and those areas in the north and at the end of their stay, travel to Cusco in the South Peruvian Andes, to travel south to Cusco most visitors just fly from Lima. The most visited area close to the affected areas is Nazca and so far the news do not say much about it.

Melissa Thetford is travelling to Lima and then to Chiclayo and Guadalupe in the North. She will spend her fall quarter in Guadalupe. Her trip has been planned for September 4th. I will contact you as soon as she replies to my messages. Guadalupe in Northern Peru has not been affected at all.

There are two places called Guadalupe in Peru. One is in the Nortern Coast near Chiclayo, Trujillo and Cajamarca and the other Guadalupe is a town south from Lima in the affected area, news mention that Guadalupe as one of the affected towns. This is important to know because our program Family will have a group travelling to Peru in the winter 2008, please clarify this for anyone interested.

I hope this information helps.

Subject: healing workshop

Hello all,

When I attended the Bridging the Americas gathering in Peru during spring equinox I had the good fortune to meet Lisa Garriguez. Althhough she introduces herself most humbly, she is an amazing woman.  She has lived in South America for seven years, and is extremely well versed in many arenas, particularly shamanic healing.  She has agreed to come to Washington and you are invited to participate in a workshop with her.  The workshop announcement/itinerary follows:  If you know others who would be interested, please forward the announcement to them and let me know.  Thanks!

Awakening the Spirit
An introduction to energy medicine and shamanic healing
By Lisa Gale Garrigues

Dates:  September 6,7,8,9 2007

Location:  Various sites in and around Dungeness, Washington

The Workshop

Living in a world out of balance we frequently feel out of balance ourselves.  This can manifest as physical illness or emotional distress.  The objective of energy medicine is to bring us back into alignment with our spirit, and awaken our own healing abilities.  In this way, we are not only helping ourselves but the people we come in contact with and the world around us.

This workshop will be a four day journey to spirit, guided by your own essence.  It is for beginners as well as people who have had some experience in energy medicine and/or shamanic healing.

The workshop will include:

How to perceive the energy of ourselves and others
How to awaken our own particular energy “gift”
How to purify our own energy centers and deal with “negative” energy
How to tap into the wisdom of your own inner healer
How to use sound, color, “shamanic time” and visionary techniques in healing

The Itinerary:

Day One:  Thursday 7-10 p.m.
An Introduction to the Energy Body:
Perceiving Energy and Awakening the Third Eye
Grounding:  Balancing Earth and Cosmic Energy
         Energy Protection and Transformation

Day Two:  Friday 7-10 p.m.
        Aligning and Purifying Chakras
        The Energy of Color

Day Three:  Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
·        Chakra Review and Partner Work
·        Discovering Your Energy Gift
·        Creativity and Energy
·        Guides and Animal Helpers

Day Four:  Sunday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Earth Medicine
The Shamanic Journey
Bringing it Home:  Practical Integration of Energy Medicine

“The Itinerary is only a proposed map of the territory to be covered.  We may diverge from it.”

The Teacher:
You.  The primary objective of this workshop is to awaken your own wisdom in a collective energetic context.

The Facilitator:
Lisa Gale Garrigues is a healer, teacher, and writer who has studied and taught techniques of energy medicine and shamanic healing in North and South America.  She is a natural intuitive, a Reiki master, and has been initiated as a “paqo”, or healer in the Q’ero tradition of the Andes.

Subject: Are you willing to support student work in Puppet Theatre?

Hi,

I am currently putting together a web page that can serve as a resource for students interested in pursuing Puppet Theatre at Evergreen. I am not sure you know we have a cutting edge program that is beginning to be known internationally for what we do. And, yes, I am doing this from Berlin, in the middle of my vacation/work putting on a show. Go figure.

I will be posting a list of faculty and staff that would be willing to work with students who have that interest in a few different levels, in inter-disciplinary programs and other configurations.

Please answer these questions if you are interested ONLY. If I don't hear from you I will assume you are not interested.

PLEASE SEDN BACK ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING:

Are you willing to let students do assignments using puppet theatre as a way to respond to program themes?

Even when the arts are not the main disciplinary bent of your program?

Are you willing to let students combine Puppet Theatre with the discipline you usually teach?

Have you supported students that have done any of this in the past?

What else would you be willing to offer to a dedicated student interested in Puppet Theatre? (For example: Physics faculty might be willing to help a student learn about applying physics and engineering principles to making puppet controls and joints...others, in Digital projections...or anthropology of Puppeteer culture...psychodrama...cultural analysis applied
to avant-garde pupppetry...the sky is the limit!)

Thank you.

Ariel
