China Business Workshop (CBW) - Syllabus - Winter 2009 

Week 1 (1/5-1/9) -- Introduction

Reading: For Friday, read StratSimChina manual, pp. 1-30. Bring your questions to workshop Friday.

Week 2 (1/12-1/16) -- Business Strategy in the China Market Today: Applications         

Assignment:

For Monday, read lightly StratSimChina manual, pp. 31-94, except for the pages listed below: (B2B Segments, p. 55; B2B Contracts, p. 56; Focus Groups, p. 66; Test Market, p. 73; Conjoint Analysis, pp. 74-77; and B2B Marketing, pp. 85-87). Bring your questions to the workshop Monday.

By Wednesday, meet with your teams and complete decisions for inputting, Practice Round, StratSimChina. Also read all skipped readings from Monday this week in the StratSimChina manual.

Week 3 (1/20-1/23) -- Chinese Values, Leadership and Business

(No Monday Class)     

Reading: For Wednesday, read "Managing in China", StratSimChina manual, pp. 95-109. Also, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 1-28 (pp. 1-101).

Assignment: For Wednesday, decisions for First Round, StratSimChina. Also, submit first CBW paper on market attractiveness and SWOT analysis (due Monday, January 26, 11:50pm). See the link Handout, China Business Workshop, Week 3 for detailed instructions on how to do this paper.

Week 4 (1/26-1/30) -- 

Reading: By Monday, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 34-38 (pp. 102-153). 

Assignment: For Wednesday - Next Round - StratSimChina

Week 5 (2/2-2/6) -- 

Reading: By Monday, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 39-43 (pp. 154-209)

Assignment: For Wednesday - Next Round - StratSimChina. Also, submit second CBW paper (due Thursday, 11:50pm).

Week 6 (2/6-2/13) -- 

Reading: By Monday, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 44-47 (pp. 209-251)

Assignment: For Wednesday - Next Round - StratSimChina

Week 7 (2/17-2/20) -- (No Class Monday)

Reading: By Wednesday, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 48-56 (pp. 251-304)

Assignment: Next Round - StratSimChina (on Wednesday). Also, submit third CBW paper (on Three Kingdom reading, due Thursday, 11:50pm).

Week 8 (2/23-2/27) – 

Reading:  By Monday, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 57-80 (pp. 305-359)

Assignment: Next Two Rounds - StratSimChina (one on Monday, one on Wednesday)

Week 9 (3/2-3/6)

Reading: By Monday, finish reading Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, Chapters 81-105 (pp. 360-407). Also, by Monday be sure you have read the Afterword to the Unabridged Edition, "About Three Kingdoms", by Moss Roberts, in Luo/Roberts, Three Kingdoms, pp. 409-478.

Assignment: Next Two Rounds - StratSimChina (one on Monday, one on Wednesday)

Week 10 (3/9-3/13)

Debriefing - StratSimChina (Monday, Wednesday)

Assignment: Final Report - StratSimChina (due Thursday, 11:50pm)
