Dangerfield’s boasts that it is the longest running comedy club in the world, having been open since 1969.  Many famous comedians have performed there, such as: Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Tim Allen, Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld.  Having this knowledge I entered the comedy club expecting greatness.  I figured since their catch phrase is “longest standing comedy club”, they must put on a pretty good show.

I was led to a cozy little booth by a nice gentleman where I promptly embraced the two drink minimum and cover charge and looked forward to the show.
The comedian who did all the introductions was pretty funny.  He did his job of warming us up for the line-up of comedians and as usual this is when most of the crowd took the time to use the restroom. (Which he mentioned was almost offensive)  This man was the second funniest comedian of the night and he wasn’t even one of the “main attractions”. The first comedian was, in my opinion, the funniest guy in the line up.  He had a varied selection of jokes.  He did not lean too heavily on racist or other “ist” jokes and provided funny anecdotes.  He also involved the crowd in his skit, and I found myself actually laughing out loud.

There were four other comedians that night, all of which blurred together.  One made really awkward jokes, another got total silence from the audience in response to his poorly delivered jokes, and yet another spent some time hitting on random women in the crowd, some of whom clearly did not want to be involved.  Instead of laughing in response to these comedians I snickered and sighed loudly, I almost felt embarrassed for them.  The last comedian was actually an elderly man who was dressed in a waiter’s uniform and who I thought I had seen actually waiting on people in the crowd.  He reminded me of my grandfather-in-law.  He told dirty jokes that I found surprising and amusing.

I walked into Dangerfield’s with my hopes high and looking for a good laugh.  With the cover charge at twenty dollars a person, plus a two drink minimum that brings the nights total cost to a grand total of fifty dollars.  Now this doesn’t seem like a whole lot, however I can go see a famous stand up comedian of my choice at The Paramount Theater in Seattle for about the same price.  (That’s probably just my west coast opinion, whatever.)

I was pretty disappointed with the show to say the least, the comedians were mediocre at best, the mandatory drinks were small and tasted like something mixed up at a high school party.  I can safely say that I would not recommend going to Dangerfield’s to anyone; it would be better to stay at home and watch Aziz Ansari’s (or any other comedian) stand-up speial on Netflix.
