Afro-Brazilian Dance

With live drumming we will learn dances that originated in Africa and migrated to Brazil during slavery. We will dance to the driving, rapturous beat from Brazil known as samba. For the people of the villages surrounding Rio de Janeiro, samba is considered their most intense, unambivalent joy. In addition, we will dance and sing to the contemporary cross-cultural beat from Bahia: Samba-Reggae and the Candomble religious dances of the Orixas. We will also learn dances from regions throughout Brazil such as Baiao, Frevo and Maracatu.

This course is a study of major themes of art and architecture, including images of the sacred, images of the figure, the development of landscape and portrayals of everyday life. Special attention will be given to early modern through contemporary art, including the virtuosity of the Baroque, art expressing enlightenment ideals, impressionism and post-impressionism, the Arts and Crafts movement, Mexican art and art made by women. All work will be studied within its political and social context. Because this class complements Introduction to Two-Dimensional Studio Art, concurrent enrollment is encouraged for students concentrating in fine arts.

This is a class where students will learn the basics of good voice production in a choral setting, as well as rehearse and perform selections in a wide range of musical idioms. Weekly attendance is required. The quarter will culminate in a concert, with students having the option of joining smaller ensembles from within the membership of the class. Students will be expected to purchase their own music, which should not exceed $20 per quarter.

This is a continuing course focused on the application of modern technology to the art of music composition. Students will continue developing skills in the use of the soft- and hardware resources in the lab to create pieces for performance and recording. We will begin to work with MAX and MSP, an object-oriented MIDI application builder, build skills in Digital Performer 3, sampling with the Kurweil K2000 and SMPTE synchronization techniques.

This course is an introduction to the tools and processes of metal fabrication. Students will practice sheet metal construction, forging, forming and welding, among other techniques, while accomplishing a series of projects that encourages student-centered design.

This continuing course will develop students' skills in analog production and introduce intermediate to advanced digital editing, mastering and multitracking for video post. Workshops will cover SMPTE synchronization, video soundtrack production, audio formats for Web and DVD distribution, and mastering for multimedia. Students will complete individual compositions, work as co-producer/engineer/performers on projects and maintain studio journals.

The third quarter of this yearlong course will further explore the theory and techniques of synthesizers, recording, mixing and processing tools for composing music using analog and digital/MIDI technology. We will work with a variety of sound synthesis techniques and expand our skills in the Mac-based digital audio multitracking and MIDI sequencing environments. Students will keep a journal for lecture notes, studio and project documentation and composition design.

Musicianship: Piano and Voice

This is a beginning piano and voice class where participants will learn the basics of piano keyboard technique and theory, and will begin the process of developing free, healthy singing voices. Regular daily practice will be required of all students. Orchestral Performance

This course is open to students who wish to perform with the Olympia Chamber Orchestra (OCO) and can pass an audition on an orchestral instrument. The OCO gives one full and one chamber concert during spring quarter. Students are expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts. The OCO specializes in works from the classical repertory as well as experimental avant-garde works. Its players include both students and community members.

Orissi, one of the major classical dance styles of India, combines both rhythmic movement and expressive mime. This class will be devoted to the principles of Orissi dance: the synthesis of foot, wrist, hand and face movement in a lyrical flow to express the philosophy of yoga. Throughout the quarter we will study tala (rhythm). Students will keep a journal of class notes, discuss the readings and have cross-cultural dialogues.

Writing the narrative film. We will read and discuss dramatic theory, and develop your ideas for a 20-minute short into a workable story with lively characters and a strong through-line. Students will follow a professional paradigm to develop characters, write to a schedule, read aloud, give and get feedback and revise. We will also screen films and read screenplays to see what makes them work.

There is a sense of personal satisfaction and creative accomplishment to be gained from making beautiful things from wood. The aim of this course will be to provide a way to realize that intention through an understanding of the basic principles of designing in wood, the physical properties of the material, and the fundamental skills necessary to shape timber to a purpose.
