This paper critiques the current state of science education in secondary schools and examines several of the current reform works. The history of integrated science is briefly reviewed, and the concept of integrated science is compared with the proposed changes in science education. The need for environmental education, and the easy fit between integrated science and environmental education are discussed. The incorporation of Project GREEN into the (ongoing) development of a watershed based integrated science course is related, and the first year of the integrated science course which was taught at River Ridge High School this year is critically examined.
