Description

This program will introduce students to language acquisition theory, linguistics, and pedagogy specific to teaching adult and K-12 English language learners (ELL). We will analyze how history, community, political climate, and school policies impact ELL education.

Concepts will be examined through readings, small group collaboration, workshops, lectures, films, and seminars.  Students will lead discussions, complete reflective writing activities, and conduct teaching demonstrations.

Students will also analyze ELL program models. Students will study how ELL’s funds of knowledge impact language learning. We will create culturally relevant curriculum based upon state and TESOL’s (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Language) standards.
