Description

This program is intended for prospective or practicing elementary and middle school teachers or those who would like to increase their mathematical understanding in preparation for more advanced mathematical studies. The program will focus on the mathematics underlying current K-8 school mathematics.  Topics will include number systems, models for operations, geometry, measurement, probability, algebraic thinking, problem-solving techniques, appropriate technology, and a study of effective and equity-oriented instructional approaches for children in grades K-8.  This program emphasizes deep conceptual understanding of the content, connections across topics, mulitiple representations, communication of mathematical ideas, and the developmental progression of topics. We will closely examine the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics and how the CCSS guide the content students learn as they move through elementary school and into middle school.  This program meets the Evergreen Master in Teaching (MiT) program prerequisite for mathematics.
