Description

Multicultural Literature and the Common Core will involve a variety of readings from American writers of diverse cultural backgrounds.  In addition, the course will provide readings in theory and pedagogy of multiculturalism at they relate to the teaching of literature.  Students will read selections from Mingshui Cai’s Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults , from Understanding Others , and from Reading Across Cultures: Teaching Literature in a Diverse Society .  Literary readings will include prose fiction and poetry by diverse American writers representing a wide range of perspectives often marginalized within schools and curriculum.  Primary topics of study include definitions and theories of multiculturalism in English/language arts education, issues of cultural authenticity, and pedagogical uses of contemporary literary works. As part of our pedagogical discussions, students will consider ways to align teaching of multicultural literature with the newly adopted Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts. Students can expect frequent seminars, weekly reflective journals, and two formal papers.

Concurrent enrollment in World Literature in the Secondary English Classroom is possible by arrangement with instructor.
