This process of development is visible both on the individual level and on the social level. This program will focus on recent research into how human development takes place, and how a deeper understanding of the psychological and social sides of development can help us make better decisions that support healthy growth as individuals and communities. The program will be structured as four intensive weekend units. During the fall the units will focus on: Introduction to Developmental Theories; Infancy and Early Attachment; Early Childhood Development and Nurturing Creativity; Adolescent Transitions. Students enrolling for 12 credits will do an independent research project spanning the themes of the quarter. Each weekend unit will also be offered as an independent 2-credit course. Take the Doing Research course and learn the basics of selecting topics, choosing appropriate information sources and putting it all together into a solid presentation. Students will become less stressed by research assignments as they learn how to recreate themselves as serious researchers. Study will include drawing structure, proportion and volume using a variety of approaches. We will also explore techniques and media, using still life and natural sources. The Dynamics of Diversity: The Immigrant Experience in Our CommunityFall, Winter and Spring quarters Credits:8 or 12Enrollment:45Meeting Times:Sat, 9a-3pPrerequisites:Faculty signature for 12-credit sectionRequired Fees :$20 for reading materials and eventsSchedule:Class ScheduleCRN:10403 (8 Cr); 10596 (12 cr)Major areas of study:include immigration history, intercultural communication, public policy, community development, and organizational management.We change our ideas about people and cultures when we learn to work together across boundaries of difference. Understanding our shared and unique histories helps us bridge the cultural gap in the workplace and in our community. This three-quarter program in The Dynamics of Diversity will help students explore the challenges and opportunities that arise from working with people from different ethnic backgrounds in such critical areas as Community Organizing, Human Resource Management, Organizational Leadership, Customer Relations, and Cultural Ethics. For each quarter the program will have two components: a classroom learning component for 6 credits and a community-internship or service-learning component for either 2 or 6 credits. As part of their community work, students will have the opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills, cultural exposure and sensitivity by working with diverse populations within the community. The 12 credit option includes a 10 hour/week internship in addition to the 4 hours/week volunteer community-service work for all students.
