Donald Chan
My name is Donald Chan. I am a teacher, pianist, conductor, and composer who will be heading the contracted studies group in music this year. Even though I have a very heavy schedule planned at Evergreen, some of my time will be spent with the Tacoma Opera Association, where I am the Artistic/ Managing Director and Resident Conductor, and wi th the Seattle Opera Association, where I am a staff conductor. My summers usually take me to St. Louis, where I am the Associate Musical Director and Conductor for the St. Louis Municipal Opera Company. I am also serving on the boards of directorship to the Thurston County Regional Arts Council and Ballet Northwest.
Before coming to Evergreen, I spent four years teaching at Earlham College in Richmon4, Indiana, and served as musical director for musical touring shows with such notables as Patrice Munsel, Roberta Peters, Robert Merrill, Ed Ames, Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Joel Grey, Jane Powell, etc. I have played piano with jazz artists such as Clark Terry, Shelly Manne, and Frank Rosselino. My Jazz Liturgy for Lecturn, Chorus, and Jazz Ensemble, composed in 1968, will be heard this coming spring with the Evergreen Chorus and Jazz Ensemble. My other musical experiences has been to musical direct an off-Broadway show in New York City, as well as an original one- act opera produced by NBC-TV in Denver Colorado.
I guess you would say that I am VERY musically oriented. I received my education at San Jose State College (now University), The Juilliard School of Music in New York City, and the University of Colorado.
My wife, Mal Pina, is an artist who is very much into macrame and batik.
We have a two year old daughter named Jennifer who likes to dance and
listen to music.
