My name is Bonnie Greenhut and I was born
in Brooklyn in 1945. I lived with my
parents and brother in a low income city
housing project until, at 20, I graduated
from college, married my high school sweet-
heart and left starry-eyed for the great
California coast.
Many illusions were shattered during that
first year of marriage and social work
(my job). I decided to go to graduate
school in psychology and managed to remain
with my husband for another 2 1/2 years.
Finally, after much trauma to both my
husband and myself, I decided I had to
be my own person--and finish my degree;
my husband and I split. My earliest
remembered experiences as a female and
my adult experiences as an academic woman
(remembering all the nasty things said about
such women) have led me to my present
interest in the psychology of women and the
women's movement.
For the last few years I've been involved in teaching about woman; last
year I worked as a volunteer counselor at a free clinic in Seattle. The
opportunity to work closely with women and to see and understand our
strengths, flaws, and beauty has been incredibly rewarding. I want very
much to free women from the psychological and societal burdens placed on
them. I want to free men too, only just now, they are not first priority.
How this will best be achieved remains to be seen. I have many ideas, a
great deal of energy, and dedicaation. I want to meet and know people who
feel as I do; I encourage you to seek me out--I will be looking for you.
