Course Description

Persistence of vision, or after-image, was the late nineteenth century explanation for how the mind imagines more than the eye sees. "Persistence of Vision" (P/V) is a one-quarter exploration of the pleasures and politics, the denigrations and celebrations of the "noblest of the senses." We'll use films, theoretical texts and the internet as well as our own visual practices to play in serious ways with the intersections of visual and social technologies. Specific areas of skill development will include: film theory, critical theory, theoretical and applied visual literacies (e.g., computer-based electronic media reproduction); ethnographic research; and culture studies. P/V will be based on a peer-assessed and collaborative learning format.

Students enrolled in P/V will attend the Seattle International Film Festival for one week May 23rd through May 29th. All students must be prepared to purchase a pass and attend the festival. In addition, students are encouraged to make use of the film and video resources provided by the Northwest Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the Cine Al Frente (Latin American) Festival.
