FYI: Our library has a great resource for films, Caren Cline. She tends to be on desk Tuesdays and Thursdays this quarter (winter). There is also a good book she recommended, Magill's Film ..in reference section under "PN19..." call number.
Also FYI: The film "I escaped from a chain gang" that we watched was the film that had a lot of impact on reforming the conditions of chain gangs. It's cool to me that the movie anticipated and incorporated the reaction before it happened. The director, LeRoi, was not black listed in the big McCarthyism stuff, though others of this genre were. Others in the genre include "Dead End", with Humphrey Bogart. It was pretty cool. Also, John Ford's 1940 version of "Grapes of Wrath".
Week 5 & 6 - Prejudice, Attitudes, Aggression, Prosocial (Helping Behvaior)
Waterdance - deals with intra-American race issues and disability issues. Mostly male.
Brother from another planet - dark humor, spoof that highlights some cultural expectations.
Week 2 - Cognitive Dissonance
Good things for a film to have
Show sequence of behaviors and thoughts that lead from one schema/mindset to another one.
Films considered for Cognitive Dissonance
- Fargo - also has good stuff to be used later for stereotypes, prejudice, is more mid-level example (not trivial, not huge)
- Ticket to Heaven - gives in depth example of cult indoctrination over time. Is more documentary, doesn't get caught up in hoopla.
- White Nights - has both sides (Russian emegree, US emegree) to see same process in 2 directions
- Birdman from Alcatraz -
