Notes on what to do for the calculus class:

1. Portfolio:

For each section of the text we cover, include:

(a) A one to two paragraph self assessment of your learning for the section

(b) Class notes and reading notes

(c) A 100 - 200 word summary of the section.

(d) Worked out problems along with a note explaining how the particular problems you chose demonstrate your mastery of a particular topic in the section.

There are many purposes for this portfolio

(a) It is a place for me to start writing your evaluation.

(b) It is documentation of your progress in the material.

(c) It is a reference work. If it is done properly, you will use it often as you find you need calculus for something.

(d) It is your reflection on your learning.

2. Section Summaries

Section summaries should be packed with as much information about the section as it is possible within the word limit. Use complete sentences, correct spelling, proper English. If an idea is complicated then you might want to include a example of how the calculation is done.

2. Homework:

Every homework problem must be self contained. Imagine that I am reading your paper without the benefit of the text or any other reference. Every problem should have enough introductory material so that I can figure what problem you are solving and how you solve it. Do not just put numbers down. You must include calculations or indications of calculations so that I can till what you were thinking about when you got the answer. If you used a calculator or computer to get the result put in enough words so that I know what calculations were done. Accurate calculations, although important, do not mean much to me. Think of each problem as if it were a mini report to your employer.

3. E-MAIL:

Every person must have an email account. I will respond to your homework by email. You can get in touch with me by email between classes. Your assignments will be out on the web.
