 Since 1801 about 20 comets have deserved being called great according to this article.  A description and historical importance of each precedes.

Brown, Peter Lancaster. (1973) Comets, Meteorites, and Men. New York: Taplinger.
 An indepth historical background of comets and meteorites and how mankind has viewed them.  Even though this book is old for being used as a science resource, history doesn’t change.

 Scientific data of the composition of comets, their creation and observations.

Levy, David H. (1994). The Quest for Comets: An Explosive Trail of Beauty and Danger. New York: Plenum.
 The historical and present observations of comets and their observers.

 An extremely brief history and an astrophysicist’s theory creates an unrelieable source for finding facts.

Whipple, Fred L. (1985).  The Mystery of Comets. Washington D.C: Smithsonian Institution.
 The growth of scientific understanding of comets helping in the growth of science and technology in general.  Good scientific data.

Yeomans, Donald K. (1991). Comets: A Chronological History of Observation, Science, Myth, and Folklore. New York: John Wiley.
 Exactly as the title implies, the history of observation, science, myth and folklore of comets.  Good description of past theories and beliefs.
