Answers to your Frequently-Asked Questions:

    Astronomy and Cosmologies, Spring 99
    with E.J. Zita
Q:  Can I take Astronomy for 8-12 credits?
A:  No, Astronomy is a 16-credit program.  (The error in the Catalog was corrected in the Update.)

Q:  What is the cosmologies part?
A:  Everyone will do a research project on how people from another time or culture understand their universe and their place in it. We will all learn from each other's research reports.

Q:  Do I need a signature or PIN  to get in?
A:  No, but you do need to pass an algebra test and come to the first day of class.

    Q.  What if I get on the waitlist?
A:  Come to the first day of class.  Those who don't will lose their spot and could open one up for you.

Q:  When and where is the first class?
A:  Tuesday 30.March at 3:30 in Lib. 1308.  Click here for the complete schedule.

Q:  Where do I get the algebra test?
A:  Click here in a few weeks, and you can take it online! (Or you can take it at the Academic Fair, before 5:30)

Q:  I register late.  How can you guarantee my enrollment in astronomy?
A:  I can't.  Get on the waitlist if necessary and COME TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.   If registered people miss the first day, that will open up space for folks on the waitlist.

Q:  What can I do to get ready for astronomy?
A:  Review your algebra, start thinking about research projects you'd like to do (both observing and library research), and go binoculars shopping.

Q:  Do I have to know physics too?
A:  No, I will teach you physics in the context of astronomy.

    Q:  Do I need a telescope?
A:  No, but you should get a good 10x50 binoculars with a tripod.  (See this link.)  We have some telescopes on campus that you can use, too.

    Q:  Do I need a calculator?
A:  No, you will learn how to do order-of-magnitude estimates and use scientific notation, so you won't need a calculator.

Q:  What about that field trip to New Mexico?
A:  It has been canceled - there is not enough room at the campground for us to go with the Horizon program.  We will try to arrange a more modest field trip to clear skies in eastern WA.

Q:  How can I talk to Zita about other questions?
A:  Come to Academic Fair or to office hours (usually Fridays at 1:30:  check her winter syllabus for weekly details..)
