                                        Overview

Our project involves making direct observations of the sun, including using the Mead telescope (with filter) and the thing for binoculars to view sun spots and track them.We will also track the path of the sun using the solar hemisphere method we learned earlier in the quarter. We can use the information that we have gathered to determine the rotational speed of the sun. Track some sunspots through personal observations and using information from SOHO and YOKOH (or various satellites).

For the cosmologies part of our project, we chose to concentrate on an aspect of solar activity that most directly tied in with the rest of our project. Since the auroral phenomenon is closely related to the solar
activity we are studying in the research component of our project, and there is a good amount of folklore surrounding these beautiful celestial events, we thought that this topic would be good for the focus of the
cosmologies part of our project. Because aurora have been directly observed by native peoples on both hemispheres for centuries there are many parallels between various cultures.(7) We intend to discover
what different cultures thought of the aurora and how it affected their lives and customs, and then compare that to our modern understanding of these events, including how they affect satellites and
communication systems.
