How to use Proctor testing software in the CAL

    Astronomy and Cosmologies, Spring 99
    with E.J. Zita
You can take your midterm anytime Monday afternoon 3 May 1999.
The CAL is reserved for our program from 2:00-5:00 pm.
Choose one hour in that time to sit down at a CAL computer and take your midterm,
using this new online software.  (The test name is "Spring 99 midterm")
If you have done the homework and workshops, it will be surprisingly simple.

Practice using the software before next Monday with a short quiz ("practice")
so you will feel comfortable doing this on the computer.  It's easy to use, after you try it once!

  • Sit down at a CAL computer by yourself, without your textbook or calculator.  You may use your portfolio.
  • Follow the prompt (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) or else go to the Start button in the lower left corner, and Restart it ("close all programs and log on as a different user")
  • When startup is complete, logon as astro with the password pulsar.  Sometimes the computer will ask you to verify the password - just type pulsar again (not a new password)
  • Now start the testing software by double-clicking on the Proctor shortcut on the desktop.
  • Proctor 97 will start up and ask you to "Please select the exam you wish to take."  Choose spring 99 midterm ( or Practice) by selecting the name, then click on continue.
  • Logon as yourself.   Your initials are your password.  If you want a new password (which is a good idea), email it Zita today so I can change it before the esam.
  • Read the instructions, then click on the Start Exam button in the upper left corner.
  • Read each question, choose and answer, and then click on the correct button above the question text (e.g. A B C or D)
  • If you're not sure about a question, leave it for now and come back to it later.
  • When you are finished, click on Grade Exam  and it will tell you your score (but not the answers.  We will go over the answers together in class.)
  • If you have any problems with the software, ask Rip Heminway, the CAL guru (or James, who helped set it up) and don't panic - you will never be penalized for computer problems, and this one has passed all its tests so far!
