Mr. P was brought to the ER complaining of severe
chest pain. When EKG readings did not show any abnormalities, the attending
physician suspected pericarditis. Explain why pericarditis causes pain
as well as places a strain on the heart and can even cause the heart to
stop beating. What WBCs might be elevated during this acute episode of
pericarditis, if the causative agent were a bacterium?
