• Discuss how all blood cells are derived from stem cells. Speak to the differentiation that occurs to produce one type of cell from another. Also address hormonal/chemical influences.
• Mr. P was brought to the ER complaining of severe chest pain. When EKG readings did not show any abnormalities, the attending physician suspected pericarditis. Explain why pericarditis causes pain as well as places a strain on the heart and can even cause the heart to stop beating. What WBCs might be elevated during this acute episode of pericarditis, if the causative agent were a bacterium?
• What is meant by cardiac output and how is it calculated?
• A contusion [black and blue mark] occurs when blood vessels rupture under the skin. Discuss how the body immediately begins the healing process. [Include any chemicals released from the tissue] As the contusion heals, the skin reflects color changes, what does this represent?
