Spring 03Digestive,
Respiratory and Urinary Systems
This assignment isdue Thursday May 15th.
Questions:
You
are eating a quick snack: a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You
wash it down with a big swig of orange juice.Identify
each part of the digestive tract your snack will travel -in order. At
each section of the tract identify what will happen to your sandwich and
juice; include all chemical, mechanical and bacterial digestion, be sure
to indicate where individual nutrients are broken down and into what structures
are absorbed.
Find
an anatomical drawing of the structures that make up the respiratory tract,
photocopy it and paste it on your answer sheet. On
this photo identify the upper respiratory tract & lower respiratory
tract. Which would you expect to be more susceptible to pathogens? Defend
your answer by explaining how the tract protects itself from potential
pathogens [hint:
this is partially immunity – partially histology]
There are some similarities between non-related systems in the body. What anatomical similarities can be drawn between the urinary & the digestive systems? What physiological similarities can be drawn between the two systems? [You must supply a minimum of 2 examples for each.] You can use drawings to substantiate your answer.
Jett,
age 24 complained that since returning from a brief trip out of the US,
she has suffered from frequent watery stools.Identify
what might be a common diagnosis of her symptoms.Discuss
the implications at the level of the digestive tract, but also how the
urinary tract should be responding to the chronic diarrhea.
Name
& describe the three basic processes of respiration. In
addition, indicate the mechanisms for maintaining homeostatic pH levels
of blood while transporting metabolic gases.
