The reasons for predicting the tides vary from recreational purposes to complicated engineering and architectural purposes. Fun activities such as surfing, fishing or clam digging require knowledge of when the tides are going to be high or low enough to do whatever activity it is that one chooses to do. In areas where shipping is important, it is important to know the tides for purposes of depth and water conditions.
